Electrician
Finding an available electrician with the right skills is rarely quick. Good firms are often booked weeks ahead, and when a breaker keeps tripping or your EV charger stops working, you haven't got time to ring round and wait for a cancellation.
Plumber
When water is dripping under the sink or a drain backs up, you don't want to spend days searching for a firm. And before a bathroom fit-out you really don't want someone who cuts corners — that rarely shows immediately, but it has a habit of resurfacing as an insurance dispute or a leak a few years later.
Removals company
Moving is hard enough on its own. You don't also want to worry about a crew turning up late, working without insurance, or suddenly asking for cash at the door. Removals is an easy trade to get burned in — especially in cities and at the end of the month, when demand peaks.
Cleaning company
A good cleaning company makes a home feel like it looks after itself. A bad one usually only becomes obvious when something is missing from a drawer or there's a scratch on the floor that wasn't there before. The difference rarely shows in the price — it's in the routines behind it.
Carpenter
Finding the right carpenter is rarely as simple as it sounds. The trade runs from heavy first-fix carpentry to millimetre-level joinery, and most firms specialise in one direction. Hire the wrong kind for the job and it shows fast — either in how it looks or in how long it lasts.
Painter and decorator
Good decorating isn't noticed. You only see it when it's done badly — usually within six months, as cracking, peeling or a patchy wall someone tried to rescue with one last hurried coat. The difference is rarely the paint; it's how much time went into the part nobody sees afterwards.
Gardener
The garden is one of the few places where a little help a few times a year shows immediately — and where the wrong help shows just as clearly. A badly cut hedge grows uneven for years, and pruning at the wrong time can hurt a fruit tree more than leaving it alone.
Roofer
The roof is the most expensive surface on a house to renovate and the one thing standing between the structure and the weather. Bad roofing work rarely shows straight away — it shows up as damp, mould and rot that has been spreading for a season or two. By then it isn't a roofing job any more.
Web agency
A new website is rarely the goal in itself — it's there to sell more, look more credible or get found by the right people. The agency you pick decides whether the site actually does that or simply looks tidier than the old one while the numbers stay flat.
Accountant
Accounting is one of the few areas where a mistake costs far more than doing it right. A late return, a missed VAT quarter, or an allowance nobody claimed can outweigh a year of bookkeeping fees — and a firm that doesn't understand your sector usually only reveals it when HMRC comes asking.
Garage
A trustworthy garage explains the diagnosis, gets your approval before adding work, and itemises every part and labour charge. Expect £60–£120/hr for labour, before parts. There is no single trade licence for repair work in the UK, but MOT testing stations and testers must be authorised by the DVSA, and IMI accreditation or Motor Ombudsman membership are useful signs of standards.
Locksmith
There is no government licence for locksmiths in the UK, which makes approval by the Master Locksmiths Association, a vetted DBS check and proper insurance the checks that matter. Standard labour runs £50–£100/hr, and a lockout call-out commonly starts at £80–£200 before parts and out-of-hours surcharges.
Heating & ventilation engineer
Anything involving gas must be carried out by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register, and stationary refrigerant work — air conditioning, most heat pumps — requires F-Gas certification. If you want the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for a heat pump, the installer must be MCS certified. Expect £45–£90/hr for standard labour and £95–£190/hr for urgent out-of-hours work.
Photographer
A good photographer has a strong portfolio in the genre you need and a contract covering delivery, image count, cancellation, copyright and usage rights. Typical UK ranges are £180–£450 for a portrait session, £1,500–£4,000 for wedding coverage and £600–£1,800 for a corporate half-day. Scope, travel, licensing and retouching all move the total.
Catering
A good caterer asks about allergies, guest numbers, venue facilities, timings, hire and staffing before giving an itemised quote. Typical UK ranges are £15–£35 per head for lunch, £40–£90 for a three-course dinner and £75–£180 per head for staffed wedding catering. Menu, location, hire, alcohol and service style all move the total.
Solicitor
Good legal help is specific: family law, landlord and tenant, employment and commercial law are separate worlds, and the right solicitor is the one who works in yours every week. Expect £150–£350/hr for an experienced solicitor, with central London firms charging well above that. Much routine work is quoted fixed: a simple will runs £150–600, and an uncontested divorce application £400–1,500 plus the court fee.
IT support
For a business, good IT support is prevention: tested backups, documented access control and a service agreement with defined response times. For a household, it's someone who turns up, fixes the thing and explains it in plain language. Expect £60–£120/hr for break-fix work, or a managed plan at £40–90 per user per month.
Personal trainer
A credible trainer holds a Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification from an Ofqual-regulated awarding body such as Active IQ or YMCA Awards, and is listed on the CIMSPA directory. Level 4 covers specialist populations — obesity, diabetes, cardiac rehab. They screen your health before the first session and build a plan around your goals rather than handing you the same template as everyone else.
Architect
A good architect works in clear RIBA stages: preparation and brief, concept design, developed design, planning drawings and, on larger jobs, technical design for building regulations and tender. Fees usually run 8–15% of build cost on a residential project taken through to completion, or a fixed fee on a bounded scope — typically £1,500–6,000 for planning drawings on a house extension.
Marketing agency
A good agency asks about your business goals before your campaign goals. Expect £75–£150/hr, or retainers from £1,000 a month for a small local business up to £4,000–6,000 for active multi-channel work.
