A long move across the country adds £300–800 depending on mileage and whether the crew needs an overnight stay. Volume, access, parking and the number of movers are what really drive the figure — a third-floor flat with no lift can add half a day.

A fixed price given after a video or home survey, not a guess over the phone. It should list the crew size, the van size, packing materials, dismantling and reassembly, parking or dispensation costs, and what happens if completion is delayed. Ask specifically whether waiting time on the day is chargeable — in a chain, it often is.

Four to six weeks, and eight in summer or at the end of a month. Fridays and the last few working days of the month are the busiest and most expensive slots, so a midweek, mid-month date can save 10–25%. In a chain, most firms will provisionally hold the date and confirm once contracts exchange.

Ask for the goods in transit and public liability certificates and read the limits: cover may be capped per item as well as per consignment, and anything you packed yourself is often excluded. Full value protection is usually available as an extra and is worth it on a house move. Check your contents policy too — some cover a move by a professional firm, but only if it's arranged in advance.

Agree these individually — they're normally priced as extras at £50–250 per item, and a piano or a large safe may need a specialist team. Disconnect appliances beforehand, empty and defrost the freezer 24 hours ahead, and say up front if anything needs plumbing back in, since most movers won't connect gas or water.

A two-bedroom flat takes three to five hours with two or three movers, a three-bedroom house five to seven, and a larger house eight to twelve. Add four to eight hours if you book a packing service the day before, which is what most people underestimate.

Around £30–70 a month for 25 sq ft, enough for a small flat's worth of boxes, and £90–200 for 100 sq ft, roughly a two-bedroom house. Container storage through a removals firm is often cheaper than self storage if you don't need regular access. Many facilities discount the first month or two.

Look for membership of the British Association of Removers or the National Guild of Removers and Storers — both have complaints schemes and require insurance. Get three written quotes after surveys, read recent reviews, and check the trading name on the quote matches the company on the insurance certificate and on Companies House.

Start four weeks out and work room by room. Label every box with the destination room and contents, heavy things in small boxes and light things in large ones. Keep a first-night box with the kettle, mugs, tea, loo roll, chargers, a screwdriver and the paperwork — it always ends up at the bottom of the van otherwise.

Arranging parking, including a suspended bay or dispensation from the council where you need one, making clear what is and isn't going, being there or nominating someone who can make decisions, and paying as agreed. Take meter readings and note any damage in writing before the crew leaves.
