Sales tax on Charlotte home repairs
Since January 1, 2017, North Carolina has charged sales tax on repair, maintenance and installation services to real property. Work that counts as a capital improvement, such as new construction or a remodel, falls under different rules (North Carolina Department of Revenue). So a repair call in Charlotte can carry sales tax where the same call in most of the other states on our list wouldn't. Charlotte suburbs in South Carolina follow South Carolina rules.
Checking a Charlotte contractor
North Carolina requires a general contractor license for projects of $40,000 or more, issued by the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors (NCLBGC). Electricians are licensed by the State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors (NCBEEC), and plumbing and heating contractors by the State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating and Fire Sprinkler Contractors. Each board has an online license lookup.
